Antwerp

The port city of Antwerp lies in the Flemish Region (Vlaams Gewest), the Dutch-speaking northern half of Belgium. With approx. 473,000 inhabitants, Antwerp is the country's largest urban municipality. Antwerp's main claims to fame are the diamond trade and the city's significance as Europe's second-largest seaport. Accordingly, the city has been dubbed not only the Stad aan de Schelde (after the Scheldt, on whose mouth the city lies) but also the Diamantenstad and the Rubensstad, after its greatest painter, Paul Rubens.

The Grote Markt, with its Renaissance-style city hall (Stadhuis), is one of the city's two main draws, together with the Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouw), whose sandstone edifice can be seen from far and wide. Wandering through the Berchem station quarter, the visitor to Antwerp is taken back to the Belle Époque. Middelheim Park offers art-in-nature installations as well as immaculately-kept greenery.
