Charleroi — in the province of Hainaut (Flemish: Henegouwen) in the Wallonian Region — has its own county (arrondissement) and a population of over 200,000, making it the biggest municipality in Wallonia, the French-speaking southern half of Belgium.
At a distance of around 50km (30 miles) from the Belgian capital, Charleroi is within reach of both of the Brussels airports, Zaventem (served by all major airlines) and Charleroi (used by budget carriers). It can be reached by road, rail (the main station being Charleroi-Sud) or by boat along the Charleroi-Brussels Canal.
The picturesque old town, dating from the 17th century, and city hall (Hôtel de Ville) on Place Charles II.
The best shopping haunt is the city's major retail address, Rue de la Montagne, while the streets around Place Albert form the gastronomic zone par excellence. The city's accommodation options range from two- to four-star hotels dotted across town.
