The Belgian city of Tournai (Dutch: Doornik) has 67,000 inhabitants and lies in the south-west of the country, in the French-speaking Wallonian Region. The Belgian capital, Brussels, is 85km (53 miles) away.
Tournai is the country's second-oldest city, harking back to Merovingian times, around 500 AD, when it was a centre of cloth production and textile trade. In the well-maintained old town, numerous mediaeval buildings attest to this city's rich history. Of particular note for the tourist are Nôtre-Dame Cathedral and the belfry from around 1200, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Visitors to Tournai will find extensive walkways and cycle paths along the banks of the city's river, the Scheldt (French: Escaut), with plenty to stop and take a look at.
