Ghent

Ghent, Belgium's third city, is the administrative capital of the province of Eastern Flanders (Oost-Vlaanderen) and has a population of 235,000. Although most of the locals have Flemish as their first language, there is widespread use of English, French and German here. In the 11th century, Ghent — which for hundreds of years beforehand had been in the hands of the Romans, Franks, Normans and Vikings — developed the second-largest economy in Europe, on the back of the city's textile trade. Ghent continued to be occupied — by the Burgundians, Spaniards and French in turn — until Belgium was awarded independence in 1830. What makes this city so worth seeing is its mediaeval old town. City Hall (Stadhuis) and the diocesan seat of St Bavo's (Sint-Baafskathedraal) are well worth a visit. Arguably the best time to visit Ghent is July, when the Gentse Feesten, a free series of music and art festivals, never fails to attract multitudes.
