Administrative capital of the Belgian province of Limburg, the Flemish city of Hasselt sits on the Albert Canal, roughly half-way between Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), just over the German border, and Leuven (Louvain). Thanks to its favoured location for trade between Bruges and Cologne, Hasselt gained its city charter as early as 1232 and a county developed around it.
Hasselt is chiefly known for its gin (jenever), produced here since the 18th century, and for its fashion industry: there are classy boutiques on seemingly every street, interspersed with restaurants and cafés. For a not particularly big city of about 70,000, Hasselt has a surprisingly lively hospitality sector. There is an intriguing Museum of Gin (Nationaal Jenevermuseum) and, of course, a must-see fashion museum (Modemuseum).
