Huy

With just over 20,000 inhabitants, the small city of Huy (Dutch: Hoei) near Liège, in the French-speaking Wallonian Region of Belgium, offers the visitor a rich mix of the historical and the modern.

Huy is easily reached by rail, as it sits on the Liège-Namur line and is served by intercity and regional fast trains. There are bus connections from cities including Liège, courtesy of local bus operator TEC.

Those keen on sport will enjoy visiting Huy on the day of the renowned Walloon Arrow (Flèche Wallonne / Waalse Pijl) one-day cycling race in mid-April, which since 1986 has had its finishing-line here, setting the whole region aflutter.

Major ports of call for those investigating local heritage are the Resistance and Concentration Camp Museum (housed in the citadel complex, now a protected monument) and the Collegiate Church of Our Lady (Nôtre-Dame), an important 14th-century Gothic legacy.
