Mechelen

Mechelen (French: Malines), in the province of Antwerp, has just over 80,000 residents and is primarily known as the archiepiscopal see of Belgium (the Archbishopric of Mechlin-Brussels) and as the former national capital under Margaret of Austria, governess of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1507-30. It is easily reached by train, with the railway station situated on the outskirts of the centre, or along the A1 motorway (the European E19 Antwerp-Paris route). There is accommodation for all budgets and requirements, from youth hostel to four-star establishments aplenty. Many of the tourist sights here — including City Hall (Stadhuis), St Rumbold's (Sint-Romboutskathedraal), and the Palaces of Margaret of York and Margaret of Austria — are found in the old town, which is barely half a mile across and, with its perfectly circular shape and broad, straight streets, best explored on foot.
