Ostend (Dutch: Oostende) is a Belgian port in the province of West Flanders, with its own international airport and international railway station as well as a ferry terminal connecting with Ramsgate. It could not be easier for visitors to reach. It is thanks to the surrealist painter and draughtsman James Ensor that Ostend has gained a reputation as an artists' city. Ensor's art can be seen at the Mu.ZEE (Kunstmuseum aan Zee), in a collection known until 2008 as the Museum of Fine Arts (Museum voor Schone Kunsten).
Ostend has a wealth of small shops, restaurants, bars and leisure venues that make a wander around town an inviting prospect. Some of the sights — such as the Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk, the marina (Jachthaven), and the Royal Galleries (Koninklijke Gaanderijen), a seaside promenade — captivate the visitor and stay fresh in the mind as one travels around this coastal resort. Ostend is a modern, compact and well-maintained bathing resort that is unquestionably worth a visit.
