In the Weser (French: Vesdre) Valley in eastern Belgium lies Verviers, with just under 55,000 residents. It is part of the province of Liège in the French-speaking Wallonian Region. Those travelling from the east have the convenience of using the German Autobahns most of the way. From Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), for instance, Verviers is just 30km (18 miles) further. The central station has a striking Jugendstil façade.
For centuries, Verviers was synonymous with textile industry and wool trade, and many imposing mercantile townhouses adorn the central streets. Verviers is proudly known as ""Wallonia's water capital"", offering the visitor countless fountains, water features and even an entire Water Museum (Maison de l'Eau) at the Aqualaine.
The most important attractions are the churches of St Remaclus (Saint-Remacle), built in 1838, and Nôtre-Dame des Récollets, completed in 1650. A stone's throw away, some further interesting sites are found, such as the 1909 Post Office, the Palace of Justice and City Hall (Hôtel de Ville).
