The small city of Aarau, with around 19,000 residents, is the administrative capital and focal point of the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is about 39km (24 miles) south-east of Basel and 67km (42 miles) north-east of Berne. Founded in 1240, the city of Aarau offers its principal attractions in the historical old town, which sits on a rocky outcrop. The centre of the old town, having an irregular square shape, is divided into corners called the four "stocks" (Stöcke). Seventy house gables with richly-painted undersides have become iconic of Aarau; the city is known even by other Swiss as the City of Fine Gables. Aarau's wealth of shopping and accommodation options is concentrated in the southern suburbs.
