Berne (German: Bern) is the seat of the Swiss federal institutions and the administrative capital of its own canton. It is a city of around 130,000 people, making it the country's fifth largest. Berne was founded in 1191 and its well-preserved old town earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1983. Berne can be reached by motorway (A1, A12 or A6), rail or air. The regional airport is at Belp. Berne is renowned as the headquarters of two giants in the confectionery world, Chocolat Tobler AG (as in Toblerone) and Wander AG (Ovaltine).
Attractions include the Untertorbrücke, one of Switzerland's oldest bridges, and the Felsenburg, a fortress tower now converted into apartments.
The leafy old city also boasts one of Europe's longest covered shopping promenades, running for 6km (nearly 4 miles).
