The largest officially bilingual city in Switzerland, the residents of Biel/Bienne and its culture are deeply characterised by a German-French dual identity. Its population of over 50,000 makes Biel/Bienne the second-largest city in the canton of Berne. Arriving here is easy by air or train, as the city sits at the midpoint between four international airports and is well-connected with the rail network. Biel/Bienne is particularly noted as a city of world-class clocks and watches, with master manufacturers including Rolex and Omega having their headquarters here. The old city is well worth seeing, with an élan conjured up by the wealth of local artists and musicians and boasting a good number of restaurants and speciality shops. Also recommended is an excursion along the Museum Mile or to the Three Lakes Country (Drei-Seen-Land / Pays des Trois-Lacs) surrounding the city.
