Capital of the canton of Graubünden (Grisons), Chur has 33,000 inhabitants and enjoys the distinction of being Switzerland's oldest city. Prettily situated on the right bank of the Upper Rhine, embraced by snow-capped mountains, Chur boasts an old town with a 15th-century City Hall (Rathaus), a series of historical Guildhalls and a baroque Episcopal Palace (Bischöfliche Schloss). Long strolls are very pleasant in the city's two major parks, the Fontanapark and the Stadtgarten. For those staying overnight, there is a wealth of options from four-star hotels to small guesthouses (Pensionen). Having the most bars of any Swiss city, Chur is well set up for those seeking nightlife. Eating options are not in short supply either, with everything available from gourmet restaurants to characterful local hostelries (Bündner Kneipe). Shopaholics will not only find Chur itself a hit but can also indulge the passion for retail at the Outlet Village nearby.
