Locarno is a city in the Italian-speaking Swiss canton of Ticino, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. It has around 15,000 inhabitants.
Its famed attraction, and Switzerland's most popular pilgrimage site, is the Madonna del Sasso in Orselina above the city. From there, one can take a gondola to the Cardada and a chairlift onwards to the Cimetta. The view from these summits is stunningly beautiful.
In Locarno old town, Castello Visconteo is worth visiting. The Piazza Grande hosts a world-renowned Locarno International Film Festival and an annual open-air music festival. The Hotel Garni Millennium and the luxury Hotel Orselina are in the centre of town, and there is a campsite 4km (2½ miles) away. The numerous shops, weekly markets and pubs make the city inviting for a stroll. The mushroom risotto at the Centovalli is unbeatable, best followed by a beverage at the Caffé dell'Arte.
