Lugano

Located in the southernmost tip of Switzerland known as the Sottoceneri, Lugano is the largest city in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, with over 55,000 inhabitants. Lugano is of some interest in popular culture terms as the home of the Fonoteca Nazionale Svizzera (Swiss National Sound Archives), founded in 1987, as well as having been the host of the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. The city's cuisine is dominated by Mediterranean flavours and local sausage meats, a combination that can be sampled in one of the Grotti, cosy establishments offering regional fare. For those dining at one of the Grotti, the locally-sold wines (Merlot or Nostrano) are recommended. Local creamy desserts include Weinschaumcrème and Brottore. Transport in this region is offered by the Gotthard Railway, which has been operating since the 19th century, and by local bus and even cable car companies.
