St Gallen, with a little over 72,000 residents, is one of Switzerland's smaller cities and offers tourists a romantic mediaeval charm. Founded in the 7th century, St Gallen presides over its own canton in eastern Switzerland. It is easily reached by rail or air, although Zürich Airport is a good hour away and the city's own airport, Altenrhein, mainly runs flights to Vienna.
