Right up against the German border, Schaffhausen is the capital of the Swiss canton of the same name. Red wine aficionados will particularly appreciate a visit, as the surrounding countryside, known as the Blauburgunderland, is where the Pinot Noir is cultivated. Schaffhausen is famous for its Rhine Falls, Europe's greatest waterfall, which is an extraordinary natural spectacle with an enormous flow of water (600 cubic metres / over 21,000 cu. ft a second in summer), falling 23m (75ft) across a breadth of 150m (nearly 500ft). The Munot, a 16th-century fortress, and All Saints Abbey (Reichskloster Allerheiligen) are also emblems of the city. Schaffhausen's old town exudes mediaeval charm, with its fairytale feel and its varied range of art, culture and cuisine making it a very special holiday or excursion destination. The city is easily reached by train from either the Swiss or the German side.
