Sion (German: Sitten) is one of Switzerland's oldest cities. With around 30,000 inhabitants and an area of 25.6km2 (just under 10 sq. miles), it is the capital of the French-speaking Swiss canton of Vaud and administrative seat of its own arrondissement.
This tranquil little city is easily reached by rail or air.
In its mediaeval old town, visitors can quietly contemplate the astronomical clock on the side of City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) and Nôtre-Dame de Valère, a fortified basilica. Besides the four enchanting châteaux of Valère, Tourbillon, Majorie/Vidomat and Montorge, the four museums (Art, Episcopal, Historical and Natural) are all remarkable in their own way.
The modern city institutions and numerous monuments are also worth a look at. To top it all, the city centre has been attractively transformed into a pedestrian precinct, making a wander more inviting.
