Echternach, a Luxembourg municipality of 5,500 inhabitants, is the main town in the charming Little Switzerland of Luxembourg. It has plenty to offer the visitor. The main sights here are the Romanesque basilica of St Willibrord's; the Abbey, famed since the Middle Ages; and the Gothic-era Dingstuhl (Judgement Seat), a former courthouse.
On the outskirts of town, the Leisure Centre on the Lake (Freizeitzentrum am See) offers a wealth of sport and recreation facilities. In accommodation terms, there is something in every price range and taste, from swanky five-star establishments to a youth hostel. One overnight stay option with particular flair awaits guests in the form of the four sentry towers in the city walls, which have been renovated and reapportioned as holiday apartments. In the picture-postcard town centre pedestrian precinct, there are plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants, as well as a good number of small but superior shops. Those visiting at Pentecost can take in the famous Echternachter Springprozession (Whitsun Parade).
