With around 88,000 inhabitants, Luxembourg is the capital of the Grand Duchy bearing the same name. The focal point of the Germany-Belgium-France triangle, this city is the seat of a good number of European institutions, as well as many financial houses. The city is easily reached by road, rail or air from all points of the compass. Served by German ICE and French TGV trains, Luxembourg is part of the European high-speed rail network. For the tourist, too, Luxembourg is not without its charms. One of the finest sights is its 17th-century cathedral. The historical old town, rich in attractions, was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. The cityscape of Luxembourg is carved out by the River Pétrusse. Its valley, reserved for walkers, demarcates the upper town from the station district. Naturally, Luxembourg also offers a first-rate shopping experience on streets such as Genussgass.
