Mersch, which has approx. 7,500 residents, is the administrative seat of its own canton within Luxembourg. It is a town made up of eight incorporated townships. Places worth visiting locally include the old castle with moat (Wasserburg) and the obelisk atop the Kronenberg, which marks the geographical centre of the country.
The National Centre for Literature is located in Mersch. Literary scholar and poet Nikolaus Welter (1871-1951) was a famous son of this town.
Visitors can stay inexpensively at holiday homes or hotels and savour the French-style local cuisine. Luxembourg City is just 15km (9 miles) away and easy to reach by train or car. Ramblers, climbers and activity holiday types get excellent value from the very scenic Alzette Valley.
