Beautiful Breda (population 170,000) lies in the Dutch province of North Brabant. In addition to the sights of the old town, whose central marketplace is great for a stroll, many nearby villages await to be explored. This Dutch city's restaurant and cafés offer many treats to sustain travellers. Several hotels of various levels offer accommodation options for every budget. The city is particularly interesting for its history: the Treaty of Breda was signed here in 1566, and it was under siege several times in the period between 1580 and 1820. The panopticon (a prison where every inmate could be observed from a single control point) served as the only prison for German prisoners of war in the Netherlands during the Second World War.
