Gouda is in the west of the Netherlands and has about 72,000 inhabitants. The city is synonymous with the famous cheese, which is made not in the city itself but in the surrounding area. Naturally, these yellow cheese slabs are omnipresent in the city and a favourite souvenir. Another beautiful memento of Gouda is household goods in the Art Deco or Art Nouveau style, made until the 1920s by ceramics manufacturers in Gouda and now highly valued. Gouda's historic marketplace is surrounded by many noteworthy buildings such as City Hall (Stadhuis), one of the oldest Gothic buildings in the Netherlands, the Weighing Hall and the Sint-Janskerk. Gouda offers mostly small, cosy hotels for guests. There are also many bars and restaurants around the historic marketplace.
