Leeuwarden, with a population of just under 95,000 (as at end 2009), is the capital of the province of Friesland (Frisia), and with its many sights and events is one of the most popular places to visit in the Netherlands.
Since 1989, Domino Day has been held annually in the Frieslandhallen, and the country's largest flower market is held on Ascension Day (Hemelvaart). Another highlight event is the Eleven Cities ice skating tour (Elfstedentocht), on the rare occasions when the winter is cold enough.
Sights include the old city centre with characteristic townhouses, a number of museums, and the Slauerhoff bridge, which can be raised.
The city is easy to reach by train or can be approached by car from northern and central Germany via the Orange Route (Oranier-Route). Flying is another alternative. This involves travelling to Amsterdam and then renting a car to drive to Leeuwarden.
