Nijmegen (earlier spelt 'Nijmwegen') is a former Hanseatic city in the eastern Netherlands with about 160,000 inhabitants. It is the country's oldest city and as such has many historic buildings worth seeing.
Nijmegen has good transport connections and can be reached easily by road as well as rail.
The city's sights include the 13th-century St Stevenskerk and the Weighing Hall on the Grote Markt.
As a university city, Nijmegen has much to offer younger visitors as well. The nightlife is characterised by countless pubs, bars and clubs. A popular meeting place is the Matrixx disco, known well beyond the city and a big draw for visitors.
