Kortrijk (French: Courtrai), which as of 2009 had approx. 75,000 inhabitants, is county seat of the arrondissement of Kortrijk (402.87km2 / 155½ sq. miles) in the Dutch-speaking north of Belgium, the Flemish Region. Close to the French border, Kortrijk, which has a major railway station, is a critical transport juncture. Shoppers descend keenly on this city from across the whole region: there are plenty of stores, shopping arcades, and pedestrian precincts. Market is held daily from Mondays to Fridays.
Kortrijk is easily reached by motorway. For those coming from further afield, there is an international airport, Kortrijk-Wevelgem, a quarter of an hour away.
Kortrijk possesses an abundance of museums, bridges, spacious parks and gardens.
Locals are proud of their listed buildings and equally of their modern architecture. On no account should one fail to call at a café on the banks of the Leie (French: Lys). Sustenance is provided by Kortrijk's numerous gourmet restaurants and bistros.
