Tongeren

Tongeren (French: Tongres), Belgium's oldest city, is in the south of the attractive Dutch-speaking province of Limburg, about 20km (12½ miles) south of the provincial capital, Hasselt. This city, which developed from a Roman settlement, has 30,000 residents and is easily reached by rail on the Liège-Antwerp line.

Visitors come from around the world to take in Tongeren's history: for instance, the remnants of the second-century city wall, and a later mediaeval wall, do not fail to fascinate visitors of all ages.

Museum aficionados will find the Arms Museum (at the Moerenpoort), the Gallo-Roman Museum, the 13th-century Béguinage (Begijnhof) and the imposing Basilica of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouw) awaiting them.

Antiques collectors can visit the renowned flea market any Sunday.

There are plenty of accommodation options for visitors to Tongeren, and information is available at the Tourist Office or on the city's website.
