Bellinzona is the capital of Ticino, the only Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland. Its ageless Italian charm attracts countless visitors each year. For travellers, Bellinzona is conveniently situated amid several Alpine passes: St Gotthard, Lucomagno (German: Lukmanier), San Bernadino and Nufena (German: Nufenen). The city is served by the A2 and A13 motorways and the Gotthardbahn highway. A highlight of Bellinzona is its mighty mediaeval fortification system, with the "Three Castles" of Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro recognised in 2000 as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The old town is very inviting for a wander or a shopping trip, with romantic alleyways, idyllic squares and plenty of small shops. Around the mediaeval Belfry or clock tower, there is a great choice of regional and international cuisine. The city has accommodation in every price range. However, capacity is limited and it is absolutely recommended to book before departure.
