Fribourg

Capital of the Swiss canton that bears its name, Fribourg has around 35,000 residents. Of all Swiss cities, it is Fribourg that possesses the largest and best-preserved mediaeval old town, whose attractions include the Cathedral of St Nicolas, the city wall and the Castle Quarter. Those intending to make more than a day trip of Fribourg will find no shortage of accommodation choices. The smaller ""town hotels"" or inns offer good value for money and are recommended. Fribourg's markets and shops stock regional specialities including wines and Gruyère cheese. It is very much the done thing to try before you buy these delicacies. Chocolaterie Villars offers visitors a glimpse of Swiss chocolate heritage. There is a shop and café on the premises.

As a university city, Fribourg has plenty to offer the younger crowd, too: there are numerous bars, clubs and discos to gladden the night owl.
