Lucerne

Lucerne (German: Luzern), with a population of around 77,000, lies on Lake Lucerne, known in German as the Vierwaldstättersee (the Four Wooded Cantons Lake) and is nestled in the majestic Alps.

The city arose around AD 750, when the Roman Empire lay in ruins. Sights here include the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) between the old town with newer districts, the water tower (Wasserturm) halfway across the bridge, and City Hall (Rathaus). Also worth a visit is the local Jesuit Church, the oldest baroque place of worship in Switzerland.

Local delicacies include Birnenweggen (pear strudel) and the Luzerner Chügelipastete, a special meat pie.

For those staying some time here, the Schweizerhof Luzern is highly recommended. This hotel's reassuring five stars promise nostalgic charm and embody what has come to be known as "Swiss Standard" — in other words, first-class luxury. The rooms, situated right on the riverbank, offer a spectacular panorama of the lake and the Swiss Alps.
