Solothurn

Proud to call itself "Switzerland's most beautiful Baroque city", Solothurn (French: Soleure) is capital of the German-speaking canton of the same name but has a population of barely 16,000.

This region is easily reached by either public or private transport.

From luxury hotel through cosy mid-range establishments to budget B&Bs, the right accommodation for everyone can be found in Solothurn.

The historic old town was built between 1520 and 1790. Its various architectural styles make it well worth a look. This is where the tempting, cosy shops and boutiques are concentrated, besides countless pubs, bars and cafés. The city's culinary delight is the Solothurner Torte, a creamy hazelnut cake.

The city's wealth of cultural institutions, including the Theatre, the Altes Spital centre, Waldegg Castle and Blumenstein Castle (now the Historical Museum), have plenty to offer.

Events take place all year round here, the most famous of which are the Solothurner Filmtage film festival in late January, the Classic Openair music festival, and Carnival (Fasnacht), which in these parts is the uncommercialised, long version.
