Edam is an enchanting town in the Dutch province of North Holland. The small old town of Edam and the tourist village of Volendam, 3km (less than two miles) away, make up the municipality of Edam-Volendam, just 20km (12½ miles) from Amsterdam. Edam is particularly celebrated for its cheese, but is also characterised by a picturesque town centre with buildings and canals from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Gothic Niklaaskerk, with its carillon, bell tower and almshouse, is a noteworthy attraction. Volendam is enchanting, with its traditional dress, wooden houses, fair, and many small shops and diverse culinary attractions. July and August are the time for a famous tourist attraction, the traditional cheese market in Edam. On Wednesdays between 10.30 and 12.30, farmers bring home-made cheeses to market in small wooden sledges.
