The capital of the Dutch province of North Holland, Haarlem is home to some 150,000 people and lies along the Spaarne river. The Gothic St Bavo dominates Haarlem's skyline, even from a distance. The banks of the Spaarne are lined with well-maintained old warehouses and splendid townhouses that belonged to wealthy brewers and merchants in the 17th century.
Picturesque façades, museums and monuments invite visitors to wander through the historic city. Cosy cafés and restaurants offer a wide range of culinary experiences. The city is just a few kilometres from the sea and the dunes, and can also be reached in about 15 minutes from Amsterdam or from Schiphol Airport.
