Rotterdam is the Netherlands' second-largest city and is home to Europe's largest sea port. Rotterdam's more than 600,000 inhabitants live in a city that is about two metres below sea level. A remarkable skyline of skyscrapers has developed in Rotterdam in the past two decades. This also includes the Erasmus Bridge, completed in 1996 — a suspension bridge leading from the harbour over the Nieuwe Maas to the city centre.
The bridge has succeeded in turning the harbour quarter from a social sore spot into a showcase district. The Luxor Theatre and the art-deco Hotel New York are here, as is the World Port Centre. The modern city centre and sophisticated building projects have drawn many famous architecture firms and others to the city.
