Utrecht

Utrecht is the capital of the Dutch province of the same name. With its central location, a connection with three motorways, a major railway station for long-distance trains, and the Merwede Canal, Utrecht is an important transport hub.

The city has a population of over 300,000 and its history can be traced back to 48 AD. Utrecht is an important academic city, with the university founded in 1636. A schism within Roman Catholicism in 1723 led to the setting-up of the Old Catholic Church in Utrecht. The city also remains the seat of the Archbishop of the Netherlands. The emblem of Utrecht is the cathedral tower (Domtoren). The old town also boasts numerous other attractions, including several museums and the architecturally intriguing Rietveld-Schröderhuis.

There are first-rate hotels in Utrecht, often situated in and among striking old townhouses. The city has a belt of romantic restaurants along the sunken Old Canal (Oudegracht). The huge Hoog-Catharijne shopping centre and the several markets around it make Utrecht an enjoyable shopping destination.
